What's the difference between a 'Lord' & a 'Sir' in the British hierarchy?

We have Lords such as Seb Coe, Andrew Lloyd Webber & their partners are titled Ladies. Then we have Alan Sugar, Elton John (whose partner is of course David Furnish) & others who all have the title 'Sir'. Is one title of a higher rank than the other?
