Is Earth in any danger of being hit by an asteroid?

I seen something on Msn about a asteroid headed for Earth that swung and missed. Well You know Nasa wouldn't tell us even if there was one so is Earth in any danger as of now? and would Amateur astrnomers all over the world be able to detect it. whats the risk
